Éric Salobir : "Machines Are Making Us Unaccustomed to Decision-Making"
By Jérôme Cordelier and Guillaume Grallet
According to Éric Salobir, generative artificial intelligence is not merely a technological advancement; it marks the beginning of a significant revolution in how knowledge is produced and transmitted. This transformation, akin to a new industrial revolution, is disrupting the way we generate ideas and disseminate information. Yet, the dialogue we believe we are having with these systems remains an illusion. Salobir references a scene from the movie Her, where an artificial intelligence simulates conversations with millions of individuals simultaneously, reassuring them by telling them what they want to hear, but without genuine interaction.
This technological revolution, which he describes as an "epistemological revolution," prompts us to question our relationship with the world and with knowledge. In discussions with philosopher Michel Serres, Éric explored how, in the past, writing weakened human memory, which had previously been sustained by oral cultures. However, this shift also brought a valuable gain: the time to understand and think, rather than just memorize. From this evolution, the key is to preserve the qualities that define our humanity and apply the same principle to artificial intelligence.
